About The Wild Hunter’s Mountain Cabin

The Wild Hunter’s Mountain Cabin is a small, rustic off-grid retreat perched on Dead Man’s Pass at Montevue Nature Farm. It is intended for adventurous couples or small families who want genuine wilderness, enormous mountain and valley views, dark skies and almost complete isolation rather than conventional hotel-style comforts. The cabin is approximately 20 minutes from Montagu and around 2.5 hours from Cape Town, yet there are no neighbouring houses in sight.

4x4 access is essential

The cabin can only be reached in a proper 4x4 vehicle via a steep jeep track. Guests should not book this stay unless they are comfortable with that access requirement. Once there, the reward is a private mountain setting that feels far removed from everyday life.

Sleeping and cabin setup

The open-plan wooden cabin uses a tri-bunk arrangement with a double bed below and a single bed above. It comfortably sleeps three adults, or two adults with up to two small children depending on the family’s sleeping arrangement. Solar power provides lighting and basic phone charging. There is a 60-litre camping fridge/freezer, a two-plate gas stove, pots, a pan and kettle, basic cutlery, crockery and utensils, a dining table, indoor braai and outdoor firepit.

Bathroom and water

This is a true off-grid setup with no running water or conventional plumbing. A rainwater tank provides water for basic washing, and there is a simple camping shower; warm shower water can be heated on the stove. The eco-friendly composting toilet is in an open-air room. Guests should bring their own drinking water—around 5 litres per person per day is a useful minimum—and extra water for washing if needed.

What is provided and what to bring

Bedding and towels are provided, along with basic supplies such as coffee, tea, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper and braai spice, plus simple cleaning equipment. Guests should bring drinking water, extra washing water, firewood and firelighters, ice, food, drinks and anything else needed for a self-sufficient mountain stay. There is no mobile-phone signal at the cabin; signal is available around Signal Hill.

Explore responsibly

Your stay includes the cabin and access to Montevue’s approximately 1,050 hectares, including scenic 4x4 tracks, hiking routes, wildlife-viewing areas, dams, lookout points and the adventure route toward Widow’s Plateau. Swimming, kayaking, picnicking and braais may be possible at the farm dams depending on conditions. A strict Leave No Trace approach applies: do not damage the veld, collect wood, litter or use firearms. Some self-cleaning is part of this rustic stay, including responsible use of the composting-toilet system.

This cabin is intentionally simple. Guests who arrive prepared will find a clean, well-maintained wilderness base with outstanding stargazing, silence and a rare sense of complete privacy.
