Verbyry Dam Wild Camping is Montevue’s deliberately simple, private camping experience for guests who want to be surrounded by the Klein Karoo rather than by rows of other campsites. Set up a tent, camping trailer or suitable off-road caravan and use the site as a quiet base from which to explore the farm. The campsite accommodates up to six guests and is intended for campers who are comfortable being largely self-sufficient.

A wild campsite, not a resort campsite

The facilities are intentionally basic. There is a compost toilet and stored water in a tank, but there is no powered stand, no conventional ablution block and none of the infrastructure of a commercial caravan park. Bring your own drinking water, sleeping equipment, cooking setup, food, lighting and other camping essentials. Campers should also arrive prepared to manage their own waste and leave the site exactly as they found it.

Privacy and nature

The main attraction is the setting beside Verbyry Dam, with open mountain scenery, dark skies and very little human disturbance. Montevue’s accommodation options are spread far apart, so the campsite offers a much more private nature experience than a conventional campground. It suits people who enjoy simple outdoor living, campfires and braais only in permitted areas, stargazing and waking up to the sounds of the farm.

Camping guests can explore Montevue Nature Farm’s approximately 1,050 hectares, with hiking, mountain-biking and 4x4 routes, viewpoints, wildlife and indigenous Klein Karoo vegetation. The farm is less than 15 minutes from Montagu, so you can still visit town easily while spending the rest of your time in a secluded wilderness setting.
