Things To Do At the Farm and Near Montagu & Route 62
The Klein Karoo, Route 62 and Montagu’s cultural background and love to maintain it’s heritage values, offers you a chance to travel back in time. The relaxed atmosphere, clean air and friendly town folk, is exactly why you are here. Take a deep breath and take it all in. There are lots to see and do! Below are lists of things to do on the Montevue Farm, as well as in the nearby area. (Just contact us for more information on how to see or do any of the following activities.)
Lots of Things To See and Do At Montevue:
- Explore the 1050 ha of mostly unspoiled Klein Karoo nature, hills and mountains at your own pace, go have a picnic in the veld, or just relax and take in the beautiful surrounds.
- Use the Map that we supplied you and explore (Ask if you have not received it) – and go tick all the boxes, discovering all our look out points and other points of interest.
- Enjoy the Cottages with Hot Tubs – Just sitting at your cabin, resting, relaxing and taking in the views will be more than enough for many people. Some of our units have Wood fired Hot Hubs (jacuzzi) on the deck, to use as a cool splash pool or hot water tub to relax.
- Swim, Canoo, paddle ski or Stand up Paddle board, in the new farm dam, “Kaalbas Dam”. (Please bring all your own equipment. Also first ask us about the current water level of the dam, if you plan to do or bring any of the above.)
- Fishing – Although Kaalbas Dam is still new, and only stocked with small Kurper (Tilapia), it can be great fun (especially for the kids) to try and catch them either with rods or small nets!
- Hiking – for easy to medium difficulty hikes, follow the 12km of jeep track roads through the farm. For more adventurous hiking, go wherever you want, following the many game trails up the mountains, through the hills and ravines. Refer to the map, and see how many hills you can conquer. Explore at your own pace!
- Mountain Climbing or Bouldering – There are many hills to conquer. We highly recommend you try the easy rope way up to Widow’s Plateau, the highest point on Montevue for breathtaking views.
- Mountain Biking – There are about 12km of jeep track of varying difficulty through the farm. Its a great Karoo MTB cycling experience, that leads you through ravines, over dry river beds, and up and over hills, with spectacular views and great view points. Note that the 12kms include a 1.5km steep section over a mountain, “Dead man’s Pass”, so challenge yourself if you are fit and more skilled.
- 4×4 Routes– Feel free to test your 4×4 vehicle over the 12km of jeep track farm roads winding through beautiful valleys, ravines, hills and mountains, and get ready for the famous mountain road behind the Wood Cabin, “Dead man’s Pass”, that is very steep and only for 4×4 vehicles.
- Game Viewing – Do a self drive or hike, to discover all the farm’s many illusive game and wild animal species. Species that have been spotted include many types of birds, baboons, wild cats, Mountain Reedbuck, Duiker, Steenbok, Kudu, Wild Donkeys, Black Backed Jackals, and we have even caught sight of a Cape Leopard. View some of the footage of these animals here: https://www.facebook.com/MontevueFarm/videos/555144965278821/. We are also going to have Springbok on our farm very soon!
- Stargazing – The Karoo, with beautiful dark skies, make for excellent stargazing. View with your eyes, bring your own binoculars or telescope. If you stay at the Wood Cabin, we might have left our telescope for you to use. (ask to make sure.)
